This paper presents two forms of asymptotic expressions for the steady state electromagnetic field, arising from a periodic source, in the form of series whose basic variable is the wave-length.

The series need not be convergent but can at least furnish an asymptotic representation of the field which is useful especially at small wave-lengths. The asymptotic methods not only provide closed form expansions for the diffracted fields, but they are also useful for eliciting physical interpretations of the various diffraction phenomena.
